It looks like the narrative is changing from migrants to refugees. This piece in the Independent is a great example of what happens when that narrative changes. The dominant frame is no longer about migrants stealing jobs from Brits, but one where there is a humanitarian crisis with millions of refugees fleeing their homes.
This change in perception, narrative, frame of reference is the magic, the thaumaturgy that was needed and while the former narrative remains strong, as demonstrated by a few of the people interviewed on the news last night, it is clearly waning.
Our perception is everything and how we hear the story changes that perception. That is the true nature of magic and the trick is working out how issues should be reframed.
Thaumaturgy works at an emotional level and it was clear that the image dominating yesterday’s media was responsible for much of the change in attitude.
Let us now hope that the attitude in the UK towards the refugees continues to swing towards a humanitarian response and away from the selfish hatred that has dominated the past few months.
